Chapter 80: ALICE AND
SNOWBALL
Week 2
On my twelfth birthday my mother handed me a square box. “Jamie,” she
said, “this is something you have wanted for a long time.”
My heart beat fast as I opened the box. Out popped a fluffy, white
Poodle puppy! I let out a joyous shout and thanked my mother. I told my mother
I was going to name her Snowball.
My mother smiled. “That is a good name,” she said. “Now a few things:
pets come with responsibility and since this is your dog, you will have to feed
her, walk her, and clean up after her. Is that understood?”

SNOWBALL
As we turned into the narrow
lane, we saw an old woman sitting in
her yard. When we passed by she called out, “Is that a new dog? I know all the dogs in the neighbourhood but I have never
seen this one before. My name is Alice,” she said, as she came toward us on the
sidewalk, dragging an aluminum
canister on wheels behind her. She collapsed onto a comfortable chair near her gate, gesturing for us to come in. She
suddenly said that it was not easy for her to breathe and that the machine
helped her in breathing.

Chapter 80: ALICE AND
SNOWBALL
“What is this little one’s
name?” she asked.
I picked up my puppy and
placed her on Alice’s lap. “Her name is snowball and mine is Jamie,” I replied. “I just got her for my
birthday today!”
“It’s very nice to meet you Jamie and Snowball, and a very Happy
birthday to you.” Alice said. Soon Alice had lost herself in snuggling
Snowball. With Alice’s eyes closed. I felt it was okay to study her breathing
machine. It reminded me of something out
of a Science fiction book. When I looked at Alice, I saw her clutching and
patting the calm dog and softly humming to her. As I watched, I saw tears roll
slowly down Alice’s cheeks.
