Announcement

There was a holiday homework:
Our holiday attachment where they were supposed to "work" for a day either at the parent's working place or "work" at home as a housekeeper.

We will be getting them to share throughout the whole of January. Please do not worry if you have not completed or started. There is no urgency. I'll give out the worksheets next Monday for those who have not received or misplaced it over the holidays.

Schedule of Maths:
We will start with Chapter 1 (numbers to 1000) pretty fast,
Followed by Chapter 2 and 3.. The key focus for this term.
Addition and subtraction within 1000.

Another key focus is the problem sums for chapter 2 and 3... It would form the foundation for Primary 2. And it's really important that they understand these topics. There's a spiral effect if they do not understand, it will be tough moving on to Primary 3 onwards... As the numbers would only gets bigger and stories will be more complex and difficult to comprehend.
Hence, would seek your kind attention on these key topics for the first term. They would really be crucial for the whole year.

We will have the PSLE booklet to complete. There are many pages and there may be homework for these pages from time to time... Depending on the speed they take to complete in school.

Do prepare them mentally. P2 is not quite like P1 with more testing and deeper learning of other subject content.

Thanks.

Regards
Mdm Chan

Things to bring for the first day of school

Things to bring for first day of school:

1) Maths Workbook 2A
2) English: the 5 items below
3) Spelling: an exercise book (lines are smaller, unlike the ones used in Primary 1)

4) a small rag to clean up the new classroom
5) art materials (the whole bag of art materials to be placed in class if you wish to do so like in 2015.)
6) story book and pencil case along with colour pencils - We will be decorating the classroom together during next week.
7) optional items: if you can donate 1 English and 1 Mother tongue story book to be used in our the class library. And the rest of the classmates can read them if they forget to bring a story book on that day, that would be great.
Age level: anything can be picture books to something like young adult fiction. Or a book you may not want it anymore... And you are more than willing to donate to our classroom library. 😊 this is truly optional... It's not compulsory and pls do not buy a new book for this purpose. I would prefer OLD and USED books.

Thanks and regards,
Mdm Chan

2014 Exam papers P2

Greetings to all!

Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2016!

Moving onto the new year, I have uploaded the exam papers from various schools for English and Mathematics. These are 2014 papers. 2015 papers should be available from the website in late January or early February.

Here's the link:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/hvbz2qme6i4uzjw/AADuu7K5r5Zv5hxxuSqXK77Ca?dl=0

There are English, Mathematics and Chinese. They have been labelled whether they are SA1, SA2, CA1 or CA2.

Explanation for these terminology:
SA1: Usually for mid year papers in May. For our context, it could be useful in April/ May.
SA2: Final year papers. The most important paper for the whole year.

CA1: First continual assessment. (Late Feb/March) before term 1 closes.
CA2: Second continual assessment. (Late Aug/September) before term 3 closes.

Hope this explains.

I hope this won't put any pressure to download or to start doing...you may want to go through some of these papers around the deadlines for the unit reviews. :)

The focus should be on MATHS. It's tougher to score for Maths as compared to English because we have open-ended questions for all unit reviews and there are no MCQ till the final year SA2. Do note these is based on past papers in our school for the past few years... it may still be subjected to changes for the year 2016.

Thanks and have a restful break till 2016.

See you all in school next Monday. :)

Cheers
Mdm Chan

Announcement for revision

Dear all,

The speech and drama has ended.

Please do focus on the revision for numbers within 20, addition and subtraction within 20 this weekend.  Learnlogy has these assignments prepared. Please do try them out.

For English, the key component is grammar. I have assigned some assignments on grammar items.

Please do revise some stuff over this weekend to ensure they are alright for Maths... For English, it is always around the subject-verb agreement. For that, please refer back to the Grammar booklet or grammar guide which was given out.

If you really need more resources, please refer to these links:
For English:

2) http://www.1hrmps.blogspot.sg/search/label/English (For an expectation of what's going to happen for English from P1 - P2)
3) http://www.1armps.blogspot.sg/search/label/English

For some of you, I have purchased the assessment books. Please do more pages for the grammar section.

For Maths:

2) http://www.1armps.blogspot.sg/search/label/Mathematics
3) http://www.1hrmps.blogspot.sg/2014/02/misconceptions-of-fewer-than-more-than.html (This post is very crucial to solve the awareness and understanding of less than, more than, fewer than and more than which often confuses many younger children)
3)http://www.1hrmps.blogspot.sg/search/label/Mathematics%20Language   (Maths Language is important if you are coaching your child. E.g. in subtraction, we will be using regroup and rename instead of "borrowing" term which was taught to us during our generation.)

Hope this helps.

As there is a book check for English, I'll pass back the MLEA books for your signatures on Friday.  Please sign and return these books back next Monday. With that, we have completed the writing components for English. At this moment,  I have sought help for some of you to complete your stellar handwriting books.

Updates for today 19 May 2015

Dear all,

Good news. We have started with our third MLEA writing today.

We have watched some snippets of "Home", the latest movie that was shown about this alien invasion on Earth, and one human being managed to be a good friend with the alien. This is similar to The Jigaree which we are doing.

The class undertook efforts to spell out the ways which they can be good friends. We'll be moving to group writing in small A4 sized paper, and eventually, they will be writing in their MLEA book for their individual work.

English grammar booklet 2

Homework:

Complete Pg 16-19..... These are from unit 10-- the Jigaree. They need to learn how to use ING in different situations.

Thanks.

English components

I'll be returning these for signing.
We did this over these 4 days. These are exam components and we have done well as a class.

Good job for the whole class. We are only left with the last component. Please revise your English this weekend. Thanks.

English Worksheets for signature

Dear all,

I have managed to mark these in time! Please look through and sign.

These will be a good indication of the likely paper we should be having. I hope the students have benefited from these revisions. Thanks.

I'll be doing group writing again for today. Writing actually helps to process their thoughts into coherent sentences,
Something that is the last step of learning English. First, they need to be able to read. Then, they learn how to comprehend. Writing is the end product.

Cheers and enjoy your weekend.

Important updates last week

Apologies, this post was wrongly posted to my previous blog: It was supposed to be communicated on Thursday, 7 May

Dear all

Important updates for this week.

1) Please revise reading for English this weekend. It's very important that he or she knows at least the sight words.

2) McOnline assignments have been posted for 1a2. Please complete them when you are free.... they are not compulsory. I have assigned about 5 every few days. You can take your time to do them when you are free.
It is also appreciated if you can spend some time to go through some assignments everyday for revision.

NB:   I will be returning Unit 9 and 10 for revision early next week. It will be crucial to revise these 2 units  next weekend

3) Please bring the English and Maths file next week for filing.

4) Reading Interest Profile

Please do complete Pg 1-5 of the booklet. After that, get them to count their answers and fill in the boxes on  Pg 6.  If possible, pls explain and bring them to the NLB to search/borrow books based on their interest. (Pg8)
Finally, get them to write their name, class and profile on the bookmark at the back of the booklet.
Do explain the use of a bookmark.

Things that have been completed in class for these past few days:
MLEA
Modified Learning Experiential experience.
Based on the experience (e.g. the sandwich making and ice-cream party), they have been writing in groups. I have been correcting them and asking them for re-writing again. However, there are still quite a fair bit of transfer errors. These are errors that occur when they are copying from one draft to another draft. However, this is just the middle of the year. On the whole, I am very heartened by the efforts taken by the class in their writing.

I will be returning to some of the students the draft and asking them to rewrite at home today. The rewriting was not done properly when I was marking the next draft.

Please return the draft on this coming Monday 11 May 2015.

Announcements for May Day

Dear all,

The English and Maths unit review have been given out. Do remember to sign on the cover page.

There is some MC Online homework assigned for the whole level. Do complete them if you have the time. It's not compulsory to finish everything.

Our class have completed the performance task. This performance task consists of Shapes and Ordinal Numbers using manipulatives. Most of them have done well. :)
We'll be giving out the rubrics once the level completes the performance task.

On 27-May Wednesday, it is a HBL (home-based learning). They do not need to attend school on that day. You may want to have alternative arrangements for that day. Homework on Learnlogy have been assigned and will be released on that day.

IMPORTANT: Lastly, for the Chinese students, please remember to revise your Chinese Oral. There is an oral booklet. Do revise it over the weekend and be prepared.

Thanks and enjoy the holiday. :)

Ordinal Numbers

Dear all,

Chapter: Ordinal numbers need to be revised too as well. My apologies. I will return the worksheets on Monday for revision.

Please refer to your text-book if you need to revise this chapter.

For this chapter, these are the things they have learnt.

1st to 10th
Please learn the spelling too.

First = 1st
Second = 2nd
Third = 3rd
Fourth = 4th
Fifth = 5th
Sixth = 6th
Seventh = 7th
Eighth = 8th
Ninth = 9th
Tenth = 10th

This also include counting from the left, and from the right. Please revise these words with your children. I will also be testing them for Spelling next week.

Other words: who is to win the race?
Who is in front of the queue -- meaning, the first in line
Who is the last? -- the furthest, away from the first.

Hypothetical Questions: If something is taken away, how is the placing being changed?
Strategy: cross out or cover up the one being taken away, then count the placing of the item.

Based on the previous unit review, the trend will be to have questions which are tougher and higher order.
However, the strategy remains: underline the key words, put down the placing (1st, 2nd, etc), then comprehend the question, and finally solving it. :)

Hope this posts helps.

Do note the key Mathematics Language which they have learnt for these 2 terms, please refer to this post

Thanks,
Mdm Chan
